AN AIR Jamaica flight attendant was jailed Monday night after narcotics police found compressed ganja concealed in his luggage at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.
He is Elan Parkinson, of a Washington Close address in St. Andrew. According to head of the Narcotics Division, Senior Superintendent Carlton Wilson, Parkinson was about to depart the island for London.
FOUND IN A TIN OF CHEESE
Allegations are that the drug was detected in his luggage while being processed by an X-ray machine. The five pounds of ganja was discovered in a tin of cheese. The Gleaner has also learnt that a woman, who allegedly gave Mr. Parkinson the tin of cheese, is being questioned by the police.
According to SSP Wilson, since January there has been an increase in the incidence of ganja smuggling.
"Just two weeks ago we seized a container with 640 pounds of ganja concealed in tins of cheese. The container was destined for Anguilla, with assorted dry goods," he said.
The officer added that since the start of the year, the narcotics police have seized at least three containers and more than 2,936 kilograms of ganja.
