Morant Bay retain titles

MORANT BAY retained their Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Jamaica Public Service (JPS)-sponsored Eastern High Schools Athletics Championships titles at the National Stadium yesterday.

The team from the St. Thomas capital tallied 604 points to top the overall section, well ahead of former champions Oberlin (436.5), Glengoffe (357), St. Thomas Technical (296) and St. Mary High (274.5).

Morant Bay also ran away with the girls' section with 342 points ahead of Oberlin (236) and Glengoffe (210) and the boys' section with their 262 points ahead of Oberlin (200.5) and St. Mary High (194.5).

Morant Bay's pair of Mickiesha Harris and Horatio Pinnock were named overall girls and boys champions with 27 points each.

CLASS ONE CHAMPS

Blessings Forbes of Morant Bay and Jemel McGowan Yallahs were the girls and boys Class One champions with 25 and 18 points respectively. Harris (27) and Akino Ming of Happy Grove (23) topped Class Two, while Pinnock (27) and Carrie Russell of St. Thomas Technical (25) topped the boys and girls Class Three section respectively.

Twenty-one records were broken on yesterday's final day.

Included among them were Morant Bay's Jerlean Blake who won the girls' Class Three 1500m in 4:59.20 to erase the previous mark of 5:08.50. Ming wiped out the boys' Class Two 400m of 50.70 with his 49.14 run; Natasha Morrison of Glengoffe took the boys' 200m Class Three in 26.30 to beat the previous best of 23.90.

Juwayne Moore of Morant Bay (23.70) beat the previous mark of 23.90 in the boys' Class Three 200m; Oretha Powell of Morant Bay (5.01m) beat the old mark of 4.75m in the girls' long jump while Sherkay Campbell (1.60m) erased the height of 1.55m in the girls' high jump.
