Advice for Portia
published: Thursday | March 2, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

NOW THAT we have a President-elect of the ruling People's National Party and Prime Minister-designate, I join with the rest of our people worldwide to wish Portia Simpson Miller all the best for the future.

My advice to her when the dust has cleared is to surround herself with with trustworthy people with knowledge of the elements that will move Jamaica to higher grounds. This doesn't necessarily mean so-called experts with high-flying degrees from Cambridge, Oxford or Harvard universities. I am not saying they are not desirable, but I am advocating balance. The simple folks can be a source and wealth of information and expertise.

Finally, she should cast her nets into those residents who returned from the United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America and elsewhere. There is immense knowledge and expertise to be found there, a source all previous administrations ignored.

I am, etc.,

LES FRANCIS
