THE EDITOR, Sir:
I APPLAUD Portia Simpson Miller for attaining the imminent and eminent appointment as Jamaica's first female Prime Minister. The prayers of the nation are with her as she takes up this new challenge.
I, an otherwise uncommitted voter, intend to be a part of history when she calls our next general election. This is, nevertheless, subject to one condition which other uncommitted voters may agree with as well.
I humbly suggest that Mrs. Simpson Miller facilitate an adjustment of the electoral laws through Parliament.
Amend them allowing voters to directly elect the head of government. I am not inclined to vote for a Member of Parliament or party so that she can make history. She needs to run on a national slate and retain her present position as MP to address the need for the head of government to have a seat in Parliament.
Such a scenario can only augur well for Jamaican democracy. It will definitely enhance this democracy's participative and inclusive nature, giving Jamaicans more control over the democratic process. Here's to hoping for a brighter future in Jamaica Land We Love.
I am, etc.,
