Ambrose
WATCHING FORMER West Indies fast bowling great Curtly Ambrose play football is more akin to watching him bat than bowl. Instead of being sweetly timed, the ball instead bounces off his foot, shin or otherwise.
But appearances are deceptive since the big man made it five goals in five games for the Masters and Celebrities team as they held the Entertainers team 1-1 in the Bob Marley One Love Football Classic held at the Collie Smith Drive Sports Ground in Kingston on Wednesday.
The ball quite literally bounced off Ambrose on the stroke of halftime as he bundled in a blocked shot by former Constant Spring man Lincoln Taffe.
The younger and quicker Entertainers had enjoyed the bulk of possession, but lacked similar composure. The Masters were, however, grateful to 40-something-year-old former national goalkeeper Leroy Graham for some agile saves that belied his age.
NEAT TOUCHES
However, going forward they were careful in possession with neat touches from the likes of Michael 'Jah Mikes' Williams and Courtney Singh. For the Entertainers, who enjoyed the bulk of possession, Wayne Marshall impressed the most, giving good service to the strikers from the left wing, but seemed to tire and, given his ability, could have done better with several chances of his own.
Lexxus meanwhile was spending chances like a millionaire. He spooned a shot over the crossbar from two yards out in the first half and a diving, or rather falling header, barely trickled over the touchline from the same range in the second half.
But he was involved in the equaliser just a few minutes later when, on 50 minutes, his shot was saved but the ball fell to Lazer Matrix who capped a solid contribution when he lashed his shot in from 10 yards out to make it 1-1.
All square it may have been at the end but the winner was Boys' Town Basic School to which donations from the 1,000-strong crowd and players were made. This was the 14th charity fixture between the sides that Clive 'Busy' Campbell has organised.
