published: Monday | March 6, 2006

MAXFIELD MASTERS defeated Mona Masters 1-0 on Saturday to gain the first lien on the inaugural NCB Capital Markets Ruddy Thelwell Cup, at Harbour View Mini Stadium.

Michael McQueen's well-struck free-kick in the first half from near 20 yards, decided the over-45 championship.

In the preliminary rounds, Pelicans won Zone A from Barbican, which advanced to the quarter-finals as one of the three best second place teams. Kingston Commission easily won Zone B from hosts Harbour View, which also advanced to the final eight as one of the best second place teams. Zone C was won by Maxfield from Rae Town, while Kush and Real Mona - the only teams in Zone D - played each other twice with Mona winning both games to advance to the quarter-finals. Lion King snatched the final quarter-final spot by winning a three-way play-off for best third place team with Christian Ambassadors and Packers.

QUARTER-FINAL ACTION

In the quarter-finals Pelicans beat Lion King 1-0, Kingston Commission lost to Rae Town 1-0, Maxfield edged Harbour View 1-0 and Real Mona prevailed 5-4 on penalties over league champions Barbican.

In the semi-finals Real Mona, through a terrific 30-yards shot from Patrick Mullings, defeated Pelicans 1-0 and Maxfield edged Rae Town 5-4 on penalties.

The Ruddy Thelwell Cup was sponsored by NCB Capital Markets and Kelme and was coordinated by the Kingston and St. Andrew Masters League Association (KSAMLA) in association with Harbour View Football Club.
