Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) rally to force draw
published: Monday | March 6, 2006

Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

ST. ELIZABETH marched to Up Park Camp, home of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) on the weekend and left with first innings points after their Supreme Ventures Super Cup cricket match ended in a draw yesterday.

After resuming their innings on 261 for five, in reply to the JDF's 151 all-out, St. Elizabeth got up to 358. Shawn Findlay's century of 119 and Damion Ebanks' 66 laid the foundation for the visitors' huge score.

Facing a deficit of 207 runs, the JDF got up to 293 for seven before stumps were drawn. Wicketkeeper/batsman Mel Wint topscored with 65 and was well supported by Andel Daley who scored an undefeated 51 and Mark Gray, 45.

JDF at one point looked in danger of losing outright. At tea, they led by nine runs with four wickets down. However, after the interval, Bereston Reid held out to Jamie Goodhart at long on, off Alton Beckford. He made 25.

Lower order batsman Kamal Dennis perished soon after for 14, caught at third man by Shane Powell of Wayne Simpson. With less than 100 runs to the good, JDF needed someone to carry his bat through the innings and Daley was the man.

Daley, brought up his half-century with a firm drive through wide mid-on off Findlay, which went for four. It took him 102 balls and nine fours to get there.

By then, the game was nothing more than a dead rubber and both captains called it quits 30 minutes from time.
