Electorial Advisory Committee (EAC) urges voters to get reverified
published: Wednesday | March 8, 2006

MILLER

THE ELECTORAL Advisory Committee (EAC) is appealing to electors who have not been reverified for the May 2006 voters' list to do so now.

The whereabouts of nearly 345,000 people of some one and a half million names published on the May 2005 voters' list need to be verified. Almost 250,000 of them have relocated and cannot be found, while close to 100,000 were not at home when reverification workers visited. Close to 65,000 of those persons published on that list are also dead.

The EAC's appeal is being done as part of the final phase of the Electoral Office of Jamaica's (EOJ) reverification exercise that will end on March 31.

Chairman of the committee, Professor Errol Miller, says while the reverification process has been going smoothly, the team has been back in the field since March, visiting homes across the island to ascertain the whereabouts of these people.

"We are asking the electors who have not been verified to visit their constituency offices and provide documentary proof of residence or call us and arrange for a visit by the reverification team," Prof. Miller said.

The EAC will be publishing a newspaper supplement this week listing the names and addresses of electors not yet found. Prof. Miller says they will be required to attend scheduled meetings in their constituencies. Those who do not attend these sittings will have 10 days to contact the returning officers.

Proof of residence:

Documents that can be used as proof of residence include: light, water and telephone bills; property tax receipts; and mortgage payments.

How to contact the EOJ:

Electors may call the toll-free line 1-888-VOTE (8683). The EOJ can be contacted seven days a week up to 10:00 p.m. Arrangements can also be made to meet with EOJ representatives in your constituency.
