Thieves rob MVP tent during Gibson Relays
published: Wednesday | March 8, 2006

MAXIMISING VELOCITY Power (MVP), the club of Asafa Powell, the world's fastest man, was robbed two Saturdays ago.

While competing at the 30th Gibson Relays, which were held at the National Stadium on Saturday February 25, the athletes' tent was raided and many valuables were stolen.

Manager of the group, Paul Francis, confirmed the robbery yesterday to The Gleaner.

CARELESSNESS

"There were a small amount of carelessness on the part of the athletes," said Francis.

"We had three teams in the men's 4x100m relay and those who weren't competing left the tent (at Stadium East) to watch the race," he said.

"It was at that time they (thieves) came and cleaned the tent of valuables."

Francis said valuables including cellphones, jewellery, camcorders, DVD players, cash, bank cards, school IDs and a driver's licence were stolen from the tent.

He did not want to give an estimate of the stolen items.

The Stadium police yesterday confirmed they had been made aware of the robbery.
