FORMER CHAMPIONS Melbourne clipped Highgate United 3-2 on Monday night, as the Jamaica Table Tennis Association (JTTA)/Northwest Develop-ment women's national club league continued.
Melbourne's Kaydian Carney won two of the three matches, trouncing sisters Tracy-Ann and Jodiann Dattadeen 3-0 in Melbourne's victory.
Carney first defeated Jodiann Dattadeen 3-0 to give Melbourne a 1-0 lead, but Tracy-Ann Dattadeen of Highgate levelled the tie 1-1 with a 3-1 win over Janelle Morris. Highgate took the lead 2-1 when Simone Williams outlasted Marsha-Rae McBean 3-2.
In the reverse games, Carney turned back Tracy-Ann Datta-deen 3-0 to once again level the tie, before Melbourne's Morris sealed victory with a comprehensive 3-0 whipping of Jodiann Dattadeen.
Melbourne, the 2003 champions, with the win, moved to seven points and into joint second-place with Windalco Kirkvine Sports Club.
Pembroke Hall lead the standings with nine points in the five-team competition with Highgate United remaining on six points and UWI rooted to the bottom on three.
The top four teams at the end of the preliminary rounds qualify for the semi-finals.
