Go Port Royal
published: Saturday | March 11, 2006

Shelly-Ann Thompson, Freelance Writer

WITH FLOODING occurring in western and northern Jamaica and roads subsequently being cut off or destroyed, it might be the best time to schedule family trips to Kingston. One of the best places in Kingston for a family day out is Port Royal.

The once 'wickedest city on earth' has lots to offer. The great 1692 earthquake, that devastated the town during the height of its growth, makes Port Royal an interesting visit for the children. During the ride to Port Royal, heighten your children's expectations about the destination by telling them the fascinating story of 'the once richest city in the world' and how it was the lair of the most feared Buccaneers which is today referred to as a 'sleepy little fishing village'.

Order your fish and bammy at one of the many fish spots, and while your meals are being prepared, visit Fort Charles.

FORT CHARLES MARITIME MUSEUM

The museum is housed in the building that served as headquarters for the British Royal Navy during the 1700s, when they commanded this vulnerable entrance to the Kingston Harbour. The small museum has a good collection of general memorabilia. Relics from the 1700s, a collection of sailing vessels, scale models and a mock-up of Horatio Nelson's private quarters are also on display.

FORT CHARLES

This is one of the most interesting and historical places in Port Royal. Said to be built in 1656, Fort Charles holds cannons used by pirates. Next door to Fort Charles is also the headquarters of the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard.

GIDDY HOUSE

Take a stroll into the Giddy House and find out if it's true that when inside one gets the feeling of spinning around. The slanted building is loved by school children as it makes them feel off balance.

These boys had the time of their lives playing on the Cannons at Fort Charles in Port Royal.
