Council mourns loss of colleague
published: Saturday | March 11, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine

MEMBERS OF staff at the St. Catherine Parish Council have been undergoing counselling to cope with the untimely death of colleague Durraine Gidden, who worked in the Planning Department of the council for the past four years.

According to Secretary Manager Michael Morris, workers at the council took news of his murder very hard and, as such, needed moral support.

"We have ordered counselling for staff here and I know some have taken it up, however it is a very sad day for the council and Jamaica at large to have lost a man like Gidden," Mr. Morris told The Gleaner on Thursday.

According to reports, after preaching at the Truth Gospel Faith Ministry Church in Bog Walk, St. Catherine about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5, Mr. Gidden was approached by a man who is said to have shook his hand and complimented him on his sermon.

Things took a turn, however, when the man suddenly pulled a gun from his waist and shot Mr. Gidden several times killing him on the spot. Mr. Gidden, who was a past student of the University of Technology, was also a lay preacher and the leader of the men's group at the church where he was killed.

Mr. Morris said his slain colleague was an asset to the Roads and Work Planning Department who was well mannered, co-operative and willing to go the extra mile to get the job done.
