Public places to be disabled friendly
published: Saturday | March 11, 2006

THE GOVERNMENT will be implementing a special project called Friendly City 2007, geared at making public places more accessible to persons with disabilities.

Senator Floyd Morris, Minister of State for Labour and Social Security, outlined the project during his contribution to the State of the Nation Debate in the Senate on Thursday.

HOTELS TO BE RANKED

Senator Morris said that, under the project, hotels would be ranked and certified as disabled friendly. He said this would be carried out in collaboration with the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities.

Senator Morris said that the project was using Cricket World Cup 2007 as a means of transforming the environment so that disabled persons can benefit from the activities related to the event.

"I am going to be going around the island over the next couple of weeks on a crusade to ensure that this project is implemented," he said.

Senator Morris said a special committee comprising all the relevant stakeholders had already been put in place to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
