JDF find a new gear
published: Saturday | March 11, 2006

AFTER A slow 1-5 start to KFC/bmobile National Basketball League (NBL) season, the newly-promoted Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) seem to be off and running.

On Thursday night they marched past the Arnett Gardens Rockers 61-58 for their second win in a row at the National Stadium Courts.

Following four straight losses the JDF's season came to life on Monday when they repelled a fourth quarter surge by defending champions St. George's Slayers to come away with a 58-55 victory.

On Thursday it was Stephen Spence who would lead the way when he scored 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, to take the JDF to victory which saw them lead 18-12 in the first quarter and 30-21 at half-time to eventually lead wire to wire despite solid third and fourth quarters by the Rockers.

Denroy Barnaby also chipped in with a well rounded 14 points, six rebounds, six steals and seven assists, while Vivian Spence had 13 points and six rebounds in a losing effort.

In the night's other game, 30 points and seven assists from guard Greg Warlock was good enough to get Runnin' Rebels out of their funk as they got by Link Up All Stars 59-48.

Runnin' Rebels, after riding high on a two-game winning streak which included a 30-point blow out over Harbour View Lakers, hit a snag when they became the first victim of bottom-placed Rainbow Storms this season. Despite Garfield Campbell's 23 points and seven rebounds, Link Up All Stars now fall to a 2-6 record.
