THE EDITOR, Sir:
REGARDING THE letter titled 'Hypocrisy by the Church' (March 9), I respectfully rebut the opinions expressed by Ms. Carol Townsend.
While there is some truth to the comments expressed there is a lot more to consider than her brief pronouncement and judgement of hypocrisy in the church.
Hypocrisy is to pretend to be what one is not. If the Church condemns yet practises without repenting of acts of sin, then clearly that is hypocrisy.
GENERAL CLAIM
However, while there are those in the Church they may be accused of such acts of hypocrisy, it is false to make a general claim that the Church is hypocritical.
We do live in a society where all acts of sin are committed by the minute. However, the outcry by the Church on the 'hot' topics such as homosexuality is not hypocritical zeal bordering on persecution.
It is vehemently speaking against a body of people, homosexuals, making significant efforts to force their anti-Christian behaviours and attitudes on the masses for acceptance and tolerance.
In my opinion, there is everything Christian-like, not hypocritical, about such a firm stance.
Rape, incest and fornication or having multiple children out of wedlock are sins as well, but they are not being shoved down the throat of the masses for acceptance neither has anyone ever claimed acceptance of such acts.
Christians taking a stand for biblical morals cannot be put in the same class as Hitler because this is a situation of quieting an outcry for indecency as proposed by the liberal homosexuals who want their sin rationalised away and embraced.
It is no different from someone trying to shove some cancer-causing agent down your throat, would you simply open up and swallow without some resistance?
If you would, which I'm pretty sure you would not, then I'm sure you'll understand the falsehood in that letter.
I am, etc.,
