THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM seeking your help in trying to contact some people.
On 28 May 1940 the Elders and Fyffes banana boat SS Carare was mined off the coast of Somerset in the Bristol Channel, having sailed the night before from Avonmouth destined for Kingston. I was a child passenger on that trip with my mother Mrs. Win Smith and two elder brothers John and Tony.
There is going to be a gathering of the few remaining survivors at Ilfracombe, England on 28 May this year, including a trip out to the wreck site if the weather permits and a memorial service. We would like to contact anyone who is either in Jamaica or now in the United Kingdom who was a survivor or who would be interested in supporting this event.
CONTACT ME
Apart from my family, there were another 25 passengers, three of whom were lost in the sinking. If anyone else is still alive after this long time and would like to get in touch, please forward their details to me.
You the old timers may recall my father Mr. F. E. V. Smith (your then cartoonist nick-named him Fever Smith) who was in charge of Food and Agriculture under Sir Arthur Richards at the time.
I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
I am, etc.,
D. PETER SMITH
