THE LABOUR Ward at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) has been chosen as the recipient of the proceeds from the upcoming Pan Caribbean Sigma run.
The eighth annual 5K run is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 9, on its usual route beginning at the Emancipation Park, into the heart of New Kingston, through Half-Way Tree and back to its starting point.
In 2005, the run attracted close to 300 participants and is expected to draw an even bigger crowd this year.
IN DIRE NEED
"We chose the UHWI Labour Ward because the facility is in dire need of life-saving equipment. The proceeds from the Pan Caribbean Sigma run will be used to purchase this equipment," said Monique Todd, senior manager, marketing and new business, at Pan Caribbean Financial Services.
Over $1.5 million was raised last year and used to purchase several pieces of equipment of the National Blood Transfusion Service (Blood Bank), including a new state-of-the-art blood refrigerator and centrifuge. An Infant Warmer System equipped with a suction unit, oxygen flow meter and yolk, as well as three Sonicaid Team Fetal Monitors, will be procured with the funds from this year's Sigma run 2006.
