Adlyn's masterpiece
published: Sunday | March 19, 2006

THE HOME of Adlyn Nelson in Retreat, St. Thomas, is a showcase of colour, textures and comfort.

The house was constructed five years ago, but was left standing empty while she completed studies at the University of the West Indies.

On graduation in 2003, Adlyn began pulling out a growing collection of magazines in which she had marked furnishings and other decorating elements. which she just loved and which she wanted in her home.

"I am a book person," Adlyn states.

INSPIRATION

Books and magazines, she says, are ways of dealing with the blues and also of finding inspiration. She took her ideas for chairs and beds to to Levi Wright in Linstead who made for her beds and living room suites and shopped for fabrics at Design Options in Kingston.

The China cabinet and dining table were found at Alexander's Occasional furnishings. Her entertainment centre came from Courts.

The kitchen cupboards which are beautiful to behold were done by Taylor Wood Furnishings. Some accessories for the living room and kitchen were found at Rochelle's Collection in Morant Bay Plaza.

Other décor elements, including the large planters used for greenery throughout the home, were the gifts of friends.

The drapes were done by interior decorator Sharon Lowe, who also selected the colours for the living room. Assisted by Lowe in putting together this dream home interior, the administrator, who works in the government civil service, states that the finished masterpiece was done "room by room, section by section".

Her son's room was decorated all in blue.

Adlyn loves her kitchen and living room the best. In the living area, two seating zones feature chairs, reds, browns and creams. The warm tones used everywhere make the home into a single master piece of comfort.

Living and dining flow into one, with the China cabinet, featuring sterling silver and crystal as the beautiful backdrop.

Her bedroom, the master bedroom, opens to a small pool which is set into the wide verandah. At night she soaks and star gazes at the bright St. Thomas sky.
