MELBOURNE, Australia:
THE STAGE is set for a big showdown between world number two Australia and number three ranked Jamaica in pool two of the netball tournament at the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
In a routine that is becoming all too familiar, Jamaica's Sunshine Girlz tuned up for tomorrow's big clash against Australia with their third one-sided victory at the Games.
Ace shooter Elaine Davis topped the scorers with 46 goals from 56 attempts as the national netballers whipped Wales 74-21.
Davis was, however, led in the area of accuracy by goal attack Simone Forbes who scored 24 from 26 tries, including a 13 from 13 spell.
LOOKED IMPRESSIVE
Jamaica's women looked very impressive in their mid-court play, reducing the Welsh to mere spectators on numerous occasions.
The top scorer for Wales was goalshooter Rebecca James with 16 from 24 attempts.
Both Jamaica and Australia are desperate to win tomorrow's game. Neither country wants to meet the hot gold medal favourites New Zealand in the semi-finals.
BOXERS OUT
Jamaica's two boxers are now out of contention for medals at the Games.
Following Omar Gavin's first round defeat on Sunday, Nicholas Walters was beaten 12-5 on points by Australia's Luke Jackson in their second round featherweight contest.
Shooter Dawn Kobayashi finished 16th in the qualifiers and did not make the final of the women's 10m air rifle event.
She had rounds of 94, 96, 98 and 97 for an overall 385. Indians Tejaswini and Avneet Sidhu topped the qualifiers and went on to take gold and silver respectively.
Paralympians Sylvia Grant, 452, and Coleen Morrison 380, were sixth and 10th, respectively in the women's seated shot put. Nigeria's Njideka took the gold with a score of 678.
ENDED CAMPAIGN
Swimmer Brad Hamilton ended his campaign here with a 24.57 clocking for seventh in heat four of the men's 50m freestyle.
He was 23rd of 45 overall with the fastest qualifier being South African Roland Schoeman who won his heat in 22.47.
On Sunday night, Jamaica's men placed 14th overall in the table tennis team competition.
In the play-off for 13th and 14th spots, they were beaten 3-1 by South Africa. Daryll Strachan scored the only victory.
Gavin Hylton lost 3-1 while Nigel Webb was beaten 3-1 and 3-2 in the other singles matches.
In the all-Jamaica women's plate squash singles final, Marlene West defeated Karen Anderson 9-3, 9-4, 9-6.
