WESTERN BUREAU:

SUPREME VENTURES Jamaica Carnival 2006 returned to western Jamaica last weekend, fresh off its Negril show, and made its stop in the small town of Junction in St. Elizabeth on Saturday night.

Byron Lee and the Dragonaires with its singers Oscar B, Jumo, Ashley and Cindy led patrons through the new dances, while veteran DJ Admiral Bailey, Rising Star first runner-up Noddy Virtue and Irie FM's DJ Sunshine also made appearances at the event.

The staging at Pines Plaza also featured the dapperly dressed Digicel Girls and costumed dancers. The crowd swelled inside the shopping centre, which was ample for the hundreds that turned out for the event.

It was a night of bizarre happenings to include radio personality Jerry D being dismissed by a full-bodied woman whom he challenged to a dance-off and ravenous women fondling and pulling Jumo off the stage as their faces lit up with big grins of appreciation.

While Oscar B and the crew had to heighten the energy level of the soca lovers, in the end patrons, young and old alike, seemed injected with high levels of excitement, as they danced to tunes like Get The Cat, It's Carnival, Dollar Wine and 'Kevin Lyttle's Turn Me On.

Noddy Virtue received a hero's welcome from his home crowd as he sang old favourites Broken Arrow, Rebel In Me and Hanging on the Wall, the same tunes that increased his chances in the recent season of Rising Star, a televised talent competition.

'Big Belly Man' Admiral Bailey took the crowd on a journey into the past, and created a buzz as he reeled off songs such as One Scotch, Della Move, Jump Up, Hot Me Coming In Hot and Soca Tatty.

DJ Sunshine was infectious as she hyped the crowd with reggae hits from the new age Rastafarian singers such as Sizzla, Jah Cure, Fanton Mojah, Junior X and Guidance. There were also bouts of danchall rhythms with Beenie Man, Bounti Killer, Vybz Kartel and Busy Signal.
