Kingfish probing drug link with football clubs
published: Wednesday | March 22, 2006

OPERATION KINGFISH has joined the narcotics police and the Financial Investigation Division (FID) in a comprehensive probe of several persons connected to football clubs in western Jamaica.

"Police intelligence has revealed that in the past and now, a number of these clubs have been benefiting from the proceeds of the illegal drug trade," head of Operation Kingfish, Assistant Commissioner Glenmore Hinds, told The Gleaner yesterday.

He said that the police were not targeting the clubs, but would be investigating a number of persons suspected to be involved in the illegal drug trade who have ties with these clubs. ACP Hinds declined to name the football clubs.

PROBING EVERY ASPECT

"We are going to be probing every aspect of this," said Senior Superintendent of Police, Carlton Wilson, commanding officer of the Narcotics Division.

The narcotics police have pointed to two persons, currently on their most wanted list, who may be connected to two clubs.

In April 2004, the police disclosed that huge sums of money, allegedly from the illegal drug trade, circulated into western Jamaica's financial network, especially in the tourist mecca of Montego Bay, which they have branded a "drug den".

Since the inception of Operation Kingfish two years ago, the security forces have arrested and charged several men who were considered masterminds behind the drug trade.
