THE BOARD of directors and management of the Creative Production and Training Centre Limited (CPTC) have welcomed Govern-ment's decision to amend the Broadcasting and Radio Re-Diffusion Act to enable local advertising to be legally carried on cable television. The response came in a statement Monday from CPTC chairman, Dr. Hopeton Dunn.
The CPTC welcomed the amendment recently approved in the Senate, following a protracted period of discussion on the subject between Govern-ment and the main stakeholders. The statement said that the absence of this amendment had long stifled the ability of creative entities such as CPTC's cable channel, CTV, in their efforts at expanding local programmes production from advertising revenues.
Dr. Dunn was quoted in the statement as saying: "Most potential advertisers, under-standably, were hesitant to participate in an activity which was cast in shadow. This action by the Government now clears the way for open competition among all participants in the media landscape. This is a levelling of the playing field as the traditional free-to-air television companies also have the option to offer programming on cable channels."
