Campbell outlasts Migoko
published: Wednesday | March 22, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

THE FIVE-TOURNAMENT Trafalgar Travel tennis series were wrapped up at the Liguanea Club courts on the weekend with the final tournament, the Trafalgar Travel Amateur Singles Tennis Championship.

The tournaments, which began in May of last year, have seen competitors in five categories vying for the top prizes of free airline tickets, hotel accommodation and passes to this year's Nasdaq tournament, which begins on April 2 in Miami, Florida.

Though several of the top seeds failed to win or some to even get to the finals of the final tournament, they had garnered enough points to secure the top prize.

In Men's Class One, while Eldad Campbell got the better of Yussuf Migoko 5-7, 1-6, 6-4 in the final on Saturday, it was Dwayne Pagon who triumphed overall, amassing 315 points and coming away victorious in two of the five tournaments played.

Allie McNab beat Michael Lawrence 6-4, 6-1 to lift the Class Two title. However, Andrew Lowe emerged victorious with 345 points overall.

In Class Three, Lee Oakley finished things up in commanding fashion when he got by Stephen Jones 7-5, 6-2 in the final which saw him emerge with an overall 300 point tally.

Richard Harris locked up the top spot in Class Four following 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alexander Cools-Lartique in Thursday's quarter-final round. Coming into the tournament, Harris was tied with Nelton Forsythe who was eliminated 3-6, 6-2, 7-3 by Andrez Coy. Harris finished up by beating Warrenton Dixon in the final, 6-1, 6-3.

It was bad news for Sasha Hanna in the Ladies B section as the competition leader was sidelined with a back injury. This left the door open for Danielle Monteith who was trailing Hanna by 10 points but got by Kemila Barrett 6-2, 6-2 to lift the overall ladies title with 300 points. The winners will leave the island for the event on March 31.
