Mona poised to advance
published: Wednesday | March 22, 2006

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

MONA ARE three points from creating history when they travel to Old Hope Road today for their second semi-final Grace Shield match against Jamaica College (JC).

When the umpire calls play at 10:00 a.m. this morning, Mona will try to become the first A League finalists to advance to the Grace Shield final, needing only first innings.

They are on five points while JC and Meadowbrook, who lost to Mona, are without a point. A win for Mona would take them to 10 points while first innings would push them to eight, leaving Meadowbrook and JC to meet next week for their first point.

Mona's coach, Owen Speid, who stated several times that they were going to become the first beaten A League finalists to win the Grace Shield, was guarded ahead of today's game.

"We are cautious with the confidence because schoolboys are playing and some times they foul up," Speid said.

"But we know we have the material. All we need to do is bat for a long period," he said.

In the day's other game, Eltham await St. Catherine in a big game at Eltham.

In the latest JIIC KO action, Mona 213-5 (Kevin Hamilton 49 not out, Kemar Wilson 41) beat Meadowbrook 164 (Carl Spence 51) by 47 runs.

HEADLEY CUP

Defending champions Holmwood need first innings points away to Garvey Maceo to advance to the semi-finals. Many-time champions STETHS also need a win against Glenmuir to advance.

In other games, William Knibb host Mannings while Titchfield take on Tacky at home.
