Portmore take on Constant Spring
published: Wednesday | March 22, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Portmore United travel to relegation battlers Constant Spring in a rescheduled Wray and Nephew National Premier League encounter starting at 3:30 p.m.

In-form Portmore United are in third position on 45 points, 14 behind leaders Waterhouse, but have two games in hand.

If they win today's game and again next Wednesday against Harbour View, they would be just eight points behind leaders Waterhouse with four rounds to go and that could make it an interesting three-way battle for the coveted title.

Mathematically, Portmore have a chance of sneaking past both Waterhouse and Harbour View, especially as they both play each other on the final day and could nullify each other.

Meanwhile, the battle at the bottom is also interestingly poised.

Constant Spring occupy 11th position on 23 points and it could take an 11th-hour rescue act to prevent them from being relegated to the Super League.

Rivoli, with 18 points, are effectively relegated as the teams above the relegation zone, Wadadah and Reno, are on 30 points and out of reach.

However, Constant Spring, on 23 points, have everything to play for and if they can upset Portmore today, they would jump to 26 points, only four behind Wadadah and Reno.

Portmore will be led by Kevin Deerr, Wolry and Kemeel Wolfe, Jason Morrison, Anthony Bennett and Anthony Modeste and could sink Constant Spring further in the mire. Constant Spring last dropped out of the premier league in 1999 but were back up the following year.

Shawn Hunter, Oneil Morrison, Gaymeon Watkins, Daemion Benjamin and Jermaine Richards will have to work overtime to secure an important win for the hosts.
