MISS JAMAICA UNIVERSE 2006
published: Thursday | March 23, 2006

Hillary Evelyn, Miss Williepet. - CONTRIBUTED

The Gleaner continues its look at the contestants in the Miss Jamaica Universe pageant ahead of the coronation on Sunday, March 26.

Name: Hillary Evelyn

Age: 18 years

Height: 5' 2"

Weight: 100 lb

Occupation: Manager and student

Sponsor: Williepet

Vital statistics: 29-23-33

Why did you decide to enter the competition?

"I have always wanted to make a strong impact on others and I think this is a grand opportunity to do that. I really want to help others in the best way I can; help a child and see that smile."

Do you think there is any negative involved in entering a competition of this nature?

"No, because competitions of this nature provide young women with unlimited opportunities. If I move on to become Miss Universe, I will be helping others and that is a positive."

What do you expect to achieve by entering this
competition?

"I hope to achieve all my goals; everything I ever wanted. I am going to get more confidence, exposure, more rounded as a young lady who younger girls can look up to and say I would like to be like her."

What do you consider to be your best asset?

"My personality and my 'bubbliness' are my greatest assets. I am approachable, giving and free spirited. I think it is definitely my personality, nothing else can top my personality."

How would you sell Jamaica to a foreigner in light of the high crime rate?

"I would never deny that we have a high crime rate, however, I would sell Jamaica to a foreigner by exploring everything that Jamaica has to offer, separate and apart from the crime. I would sell our beaches, music, culture and women. There is so much to do here that you cannot do in other countries."

Would you say Jamaicans are diverse, and why?

"I would say Jamaica's people are diverse. Each of us has our own personality, yet we are so much alike 'Out of many one people'. As Jamaicans we can work as one even though we are so diverse. We can do almost anything we put our minds to."

If you could meet one person, who would it be and why?

"I would like to have met Princess Diana of Wales because of the legacy she has left behind. It is such a tremendous legacy and I would like to experience it. I admire all she has done by helping others with her status. She really helped others by reaching out."

If you were to win the title, what sector of society would you work with and why?

"I would work with all sections of society possible, I don't want to limit myself. I want to be everywhere I can be and reach out to everybody I can reach out to."

If you were the Prime Minister what changes would you make and how would you go about making those changes?

"I would want to change the education awareness of our people. To make them know that they need a good education to fully achieve their dreams. I would start seminars to allow people to know why education is important. Persons need to have a good understanding as to why education is important."

What is your view on the CSME and do you think it will better Jamaica?

"It is something new to the country that may be of some assistance to our people. There are lots of persons out there who have no hope and something like the CSME may open windows of opportunities for many Jamaicans."
