THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE PROBLEM with extending the right to Jamaican citizens to bear arms could prove problematic, and instead of being a deterrent to criminal activities could possibly increase those numbers.
There exists many persons in our society who have no confidence in the justice system. What will happen when there is some personal vendetta between persons? I, for one, would feel somewhat cocky if I possess a firearm. If there are persons in this society with guns, a simple argument could prove fatal and cause several catastrophes in our nation - innocent lives would be lost.
What possible method could be put in place to ensure that a don or some other criminal who has succeeded in avoiding a criminal record via various means never legally owns a firearm?
What we need is a more professional police force and Government as well as a responsible people. I have one line of advice - we are embarking on a journey down the wrong road!
I am, etc.,
