SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:
THE STAFF shortage at the Guy's Hill High School in St Catherine, which resulted in a disruption of classes on Tuesday, has been eased, with four specialised teachers identified. There are five other positions to be filled.
At a meeting held at the school yesterday between principal Timothy Bailey and representatives of the Parent-Teacher Association, it was announced that a computer teacher, a reading specialist, a business teacher and a religious
education teacher were identified and are expected to start working soon.
Dorrett Campbell, director of communications in the Ministry of Education, said the problem of staffing has been resolved for the time being and that the regional director will ensure the school is more closely monitored.
BETTER RECRUITING
She added that the additional staff would allow for better time tabling, and a more efficient operation of the school. Ms. Campbell explained that the bureaucracy that had previously disallowed the principal from recruiting his own staff no longer exists. As such, the principal can now go ahead and recruit suitable persons for the specialised positions.
On Tuesday, several parents and students padlocked the school gate protesting against the shortage of nine teachers at the institution. Students are often left unsupervised as a result of the shortage.
