Contracts awarded from PetroCaribe fund
published: Friday | March 24, 2006

THE NATIONAL Contracts Commission (NCC) has endorsed numerous projects through the National Works Agency (NWA), to be undertaken with funds secured through the Venezuela's PetroCaribe Initiative, for a value of more than $206 million.

In a statement this week, the NCC said that endorsements for the contracts were carried out during February. A total of 11 contracts have been endorsed, using PetroCaribe funds, for the NWA's Damaged Road Programme.

WORK IN PROGRESS

NWA Communications Manager, Stephen Shaw, on Wednesday confirmed that several of the contracts have been awarded and that work has begun in several areas.

"Work is under way in St. Catherine on the Simon Content to Bamboo road, on the Alley Bridge in Clarendon, and several other areas, and should be completed within a three to four-month period," Mr. Shaw said.

The PetroCaribe Initiative allows for an initial grace period of two years for repayment of funds secured by the Jamaican Government under the agreement. It also allows for the establishment of a fund for socio-economic programmes.
