Do not deny our history
published: Monday | March 27, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HEARD with sadness the statements of politicians in St. Elizabeth that we should be ashamed of our foreparents in slavery. The history of how we came to be scattered Africans around the world, especially in the western hemisphere, should be a special subject in our schools. Our culture, language, strength and development are based on where we are coming from and should be a guide to where we should be going.

These politicians and anyone else who want to deny our history should be the ones ashamed of themselves in voicing such stupidity. It is a reality that all nations have at sometime or other in their history gone through enslavement. Have they ever denied it? Look at the status in the world most enjoy today because they have not denied their history, but use it for the positive enhancement of their people.

I am, etc.,
