THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WAS especially touched this morning (Friday, March 4) when I read the Letter of the Day 'Teachers, reach out and touch ...' while listening to a gospel hymn song by Cissy Houston "Count your blessings". Yes indeed, we have to count our blessings, because in the midst of chaos and the high crime rate, here stands alone a woman who has compassion and love for her student that she took the time to take action.
Ms. Barbara Kington, your cry for help for these unfortunate children will be heard by many, Teachers who are aware of this situation that you spoke about and were afraid to come forth will do so now.
It saddens me to know that our children are suffering this indignity, to be violated and their bodies abused by those who are supposed to be caregivers. Mothers, please for the sake of your children, pay close attention to them and if it is a situation where stepparents are living in the homes, make sure that your children, especially your girls, are not being sexually abused and open the door of communication so that they know in the event that they are faced with this situation, they should be able to come to you without having to feel that they have contributed to it.
Ms. Kington, may you continue to shine in a positive way and may your children be blessed. Thank you for caring.
I am, etc.,
