Jamaican student attacked in Barbados
published: Monday | March 27, 2006

Debbie-Ann Wright, Gleaner/Power 106 Reporter

THE GUILD of students at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados will today hold an emergency meeting to discuss the issue of student security following the beating of a Jamaican student on a bus on Friday.

Tony-Ann Foster a 24-year-old law student was travelling to Bridgetown, Barbados on a minibus with two of her friends when a man reportedly boarded the vehicle and demanded that she make room for him.

According to Miss Foster, she indicated to the man that there was no space to accommodate him, but the man remained on the bus.

Shortly after, the man allegedly began to elbow the student in her side. Miss Foster said she demanded that he desist. "Just as I said it, he just punched me in the face, he just punched me and I'm in shock and I'm just feeling these blows continuously and then at one time, he grabbed my hair so that he could have my face to punch me," she recalled.

The final-year law student broke into tears as she described the incident. She said no one in the bus came to her rescue and that although her friends begged the bus driver to stop he did not do so immediately.

According to Miss Foster, when the bus driver finally stopped, the alleged abuser walked away. Miss Foster said she has reported the matter to the Barbados police.

In the meantime, the University's administration has also been informed of the incident.
