published: Wednesday | March 29, 2006

Laura Matalon-Chandley (right), daughter of Vernon Matalon, president and chief executive officer of the ICD Group, weeps after reading a poem at her father's graveside in the Jewish Cemetery on Orange Street, Kingston at a thanksgiving service yesterday. He was 72. - JUNIOR DOWIE/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

OVER A hundred persons including family, friends and well-wishers turned out yesterday to pay their last respects to the late Vernon Carl Matalon, who passed away on Sunday. He was 72.

The youngest of 11 Matalon brothers, he was described by his niece Judith Bruce as a delightful human being who was a wonderful father, a hard worker and great fun to be around.

She said he enjoyed playing golf, tennis and going bird shooting.

In a letter sent to the family, his life-long friend Kato-San said, "Vernon Matalon was a man who taught us how to enjoy life, how to love families, how to treat a friend as a friend. His real friendship will never fade away from us and remains forever."

CHAIRMAN AND CEO

At the time of his death, Mr. Matalon was serving as the chief executive officer of the Industrial Commercial Development Limited Group. He was also the chairman of Uni Motors (now Toyota Jamaica) and Facey Commodity.

Mr. Matalon leaves behind wife Barbara Ann, daughters Michelle, Kimberly, Karen and Laura and six grandchildren.
