Schoolboy stabbed to death
published: Wednesday | March 29, 2006

VIOLENCE IN Jamaican schools, which has been a major concern for legislators and educators in recent years, reared its ugly head again Monday, this time at the Camperdown High School in eastern Kingston.

The latest incident has claimed the life of Romane Nicholson, a 17-year-old fifth-form student.

He died Monday night at the Kingston Public Hospital, several hours after he was stabbed by another student.

While school authorities have declined to comment on the incident, police reports are that Romane was stabbed in the left side of the neck.

"I don't know what really happened; all I know is that they were gambling and the other boxed, then stabbed him," said Hortense Simms, the slain boy's mother.

Sergeant Norman McGibbon, sub-officer in charge of the Franklin Town area, confirmed the incident.

TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Police say the 17-year-old boy who has been implicated in the murder was taken into custody yesterday by his parents. The Gleaner also understands that at least 14 other students were taken to Elletson Road Police Station, where they were interrogated by the police.
