THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE in support of the proposal of Senator Trevor Munroe that there be serious consideration to a 'Government of National Unity'.
It is very clear that partisan politics and by extension partisan leadership, have not given the best to the country in all instances. It is my belief that if we were to put Jamaica first to address the critical issues of crime, education, unemployment, investment and industry, and constitutional reform, we would be able to move the country forward, as it is very possible that the sum total of the solutions offered by various constituents will be greater that the total of any suggestion from a particular party.
This approach also allows for the garnering of broad-based support, which would increase the likelihood of success. I call on the business sector, the church community, and every citizen, to join the call for a different kind of representational politics which will take us out of the mire.
It is clear that if we continue to do the same things the same way with the same people, we cannot reasonably expect a different outcome. I therefore implore Prime Minister-designate Portia Simpson Miller to consider seriously other models of leadership that will serve the broadest cross-section of the population in Jamaica and thereby resolve some of the chronic problems with which we have been plagued for so long.
I am, etc.,
