THE EDITOR, Sir:
LIKE THE Patterson victory of 1992, the Simpson Miller victory of 2006, is of great significance. The Patterson regime had moderated the political temperature and at the same time, modernised Jamaica's economic and social infrastructure. However, most Jamaicans feel alienated from the gains that we have made. Citizens are demotivated despite the fact that there are opportunities that have been created to facilitate their personal advancement. This is where the magic of a Simpson Miller comes in.
Portia Simpson Miller has the potential to motivate and inspire any individual or organisation. She will now have to use that magical skill of motivation to inspire the country to increase production and improve productivity. We have to put idle hands to idle lands. We have to point our young people to the numerous opportunities that are available through globalisation and the creation of the Caribbean Single Market (CSM).
It is my view that Portia Simpson Miller is going to do extremely well. The utterance of some of my colleagues in questioning her capacity is a certain ingredient to energise her. People must understand what such negative commentaries can do to an individual. In 1989 when I got blind, a biological brother of mine told me that I was going to stay at Bailey's Vale for the rest of my life and raise chickens. This negative utterance inspired me to excel and today, I have proven him wrong. I believe that Portia is going to do the same to her critics and the ball is now in her courts to do so.
Kick it, Portia, kick it!
I am, etc.,
