Williams sets the pace for Vere
published: Thursday | March 30, 2006

Vere Technical's Kimberly Williams hops, skips and jumps on her way to victory in the girls' triple jump Open final with a leap of 13.18 metres on yesterday's opening day of the 2006 VMBS/ISSA Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium. - IAN ALLEN/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

VERE TECHNICAL'S Kimberly Williams was a happy girl when she won the first final of Champs 2006 yesterday.

For the second year running, Williams got Vere off to a flying start when she struck gold in the girls' triple jump Open.

"I feel very good, because my teammates were expecting me to win. I am the champion so I went out there and did my best. I am very happy," Williams said after her 13.18-metre jump.

DIFFICULT

Holmwood's second-place finisher, Rosemarie White, was tipped by some track and field experts to win, but while Williams admitted that "it was very difficult", she was not willing to let go of the title.

"Rosemarie was leading and my teammate came and said to me, 'Kim', you can't let she win because you are the champion and we all are waiting for you to give us that winning jump," she said.

"There was a lot of pressure but my coach (Dwayne Jarrett) told me 'relax, relax, and go out there and do your thing, don't focus on your competitors, just do what you have to do'," said the Carifta Games Under-17 champion of her personal best leap.
