Parliament on a break
published: Friday | March 31, 2006

Dionne Rose, Staff Reporter

PARLIAMENT WILL today be prorogued with the opening of the new session set for April 12.

On Wednesday the House of Representatives met for the last time for the legislative year.

The House had accomplished more work in the 2004/05 legislative year with 39 bills passed in that year.

But Leader of Government Business, Dr. Peter Phillips, said the 2005/06 legislative year was a successful one with some 23 bills passed and 11 Private Members motions approved.

"During this session, Mr. Speaker, the House has done a considerable amount of business," he said while addressing the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

NEW SESSION

The opening of the new session next month will see some Members of Parliament taking up new roles.

For example, for the first time a woman, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who was sworn in yesterday will lead the Government members up Duke Street.

The composition of the Senate will also be changed as Leader of Government Business, Senator Burchell Whiteman, has announced that he will be resigning from the Senate.

Senator Whiteman served as Education Minister for 10 consecutive years, having assumed the position in 1992. He was subsequently assigned the position of Information Minister and Leader of Government Business in the Senate.

A former teacher, Mr. Whiteman has accumulated 30 years of service in the academic field.
