THE CORNWALL College Trust Limited (CCTL) has announced the establishment of a US$500,000 (J$32.5 million) endowment fund as part of its 110th anniversary to offset the school's expenses that are not funded by the Government.
Chairman of the CCTL, Jeff McLeod, made the announce-ment at the handing over of a school bus, valued at $1.8 million, to principal Denham McIntyre on Tuesday.
"Funding for a school outside of government has to come in a manner that is organised and is consistent with the needs of the school," Mr. McLeod said.
"We are trying to raise an endowment fund, which will be invested and only interest and additional contributions used to assist the school's needs."
Mr. McLeod said the Trust, an umbrella body recently formed to work closely with local and overseas chapters of the Cornwall College Old Boys' Association, hopes to begin the fund by getting 2000 past students to each donate US$250 (J$16,250).
OLDEST HIGH SCHOOL
Cornwall College is the oldest government boys' high school in western Jamaica.
"I am very happy to know that the CCTL has taken such an interest in the development of Cornwall College. I also must laud the great effort of the CCTL and the wisdom of its Chairman," Mr. McIntyre responded.
The headmaster said the initiative comes at a time when the institution requires extensive rehabilitation work and an even greater need for all-round security.
"The profits of this fund will go towards the identified needs of the school in order of priority," Mr. McIntyre stated.
The endowment will also go towards scholarships for both students and teachers as well as to assist needy students who have difficulty paying for examinations and school fees.
