THE EDITOR, Sir:CONGRATULATIONS ARE in order for our new Prime Minister, who has had the courage and ambition to compete for the leadership of her party and country. She has an extremely difficult job to tackle - severe cultural, social, economic and educational problems.
Communication must be her priority. Using the media as her weapon, she should say immediately what her aims and objectives are. People will respect her for it.
She should use all the different areas of the media to get her message across - radio, television, Internet, telephone, national and international press. These radio and television programmes should be on a separate station from our existing RJR and radio talk shows.
Volunteers should be invited to help plan, formulate and finance those projects. Networks of retirees, returnees and other professionals could offer their support to organisations and individuals needing help.
Subjects like reading, language, pre-school activities, good parenting, health and nutrition, sex education and relationships could all be broadcast over the air. Both the Internet and the television could be used for distance learning in preparation for further and advanced courses in education.
Jamaicans are ambitious, intelligent, creative and always keen to improve their position in life. All Jamaicans should be encouraged to invest in their country.
We have come a long way since the crossing of the 'Middle Passage'. Portia stands head and shoulders above us all. She has reached the highest position in the land. Yet, her greatest challenge is to insure that every little girl in the remotest corners of Jamaica, understands that she can aspire to that position.
Portia, we salute you!
I am, etc.,
