Three cheers for Portia
published: Tuesday | April 4, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THREE CHEERS for Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller on her performance thus far in words and deeds since ascending to the top political job in Jamaica. Her inauguration speech was excellent in many respects as she addressed the major issues that concern us members of the Jamaican Diaspora.

She scored a virtual socio-political coup d'etat by praying aloud at length at the beginning of her address. Whatever else might and could be said about that act, it must be noted that it took guts and it resonated well with Christian-minded diaspora members. We agree with her in prayer and anticipate God's affirmative responses to her petitions for blessings on her administration and on our country.

I suggest that with such strong overtures to the Jamaican church, the Prime Minister should have numerous clergymen and parishioners running to her to volunteer their time, talents and treasures to help her serve our country well. Although she was a part of the old guard that allowed crime and corruption to mushroom on the island, she should now be given a fair chance to conquer those monsters.

In naming her cabinet with the inclusion of Omar Davies, Maxine Henry-Wilson and Peter Phillips, Prime Minister Portia has shown a genuine conciliatory spirit and true wisdom. I was disappointed that Karl Blythe did not make the Cabinet but I think his ill-advised statements following the prime minister's victory as PNP chairperson might have sealed his fate in a classic case of 'cock mouth kill cock'.

I am, etc.,
