SANDOR PANTON of Top5Jamaica.Com, in association with the Gleaner Online, guides you through what's new, cool and interesting on the Internet. From Jamaica to the wider Caribbean and the rest of the World, this is the 'Week on the Web'.
Video sharing online
It's said to be the new craze on the Internet; literally tens of thousands of video clips can be viewed for free at video sharing websites, the most popular of which are http://www.putfile.com and http://www.youtube.com. At these sites, you can create an account and upload your own video clips or simply search the wide variety of video categories including amateur/homemade films full of foul-ups, bleeps and blunders and footage from the war in Iraq.
There's already a lot of Jamaica-related content on these video-sharing sites as well. From cliff-diving scenes in Negril to amateur footage at local and international stage shows and dances, there is quite a lot to be seen.
Podcasting - Podcast search engines
Podcasting is the creation of audio files (usually in MP3 format) that are made available online so that users can download and listen to them at their own convenience - typically using their Ipod or other Mp3 player. Especially for young 'Generation Y' people who are far more likely than others to find this useful and of interest, we've listed a few new and popular Podcast search engines here: http://www.podzinger.com, http://podcasts.yahoo.com, http://www.podscope.com, http://www.podcast.net, http://www.thepodcastnetwork.com, http://www.podcastalley.com.
Websites of the Week
http://www.yardflex.com - possessing a relatively simple site design, but with content depth that will have you re-visiting for updates, YardFlex is an independent source of local entertainment news and behind the dancehall scenes information.
http://www.sitepronews.com - SiteProNews.Com is a newsletter and resource website for website owners and developers. It's updated daily with useful tips and information for novices as well as web professionals.
.XXX domain
It has been controversial, but plans for the creation of a .XXX domain name extension catering specifically to adult websites are seemingly at a stand-still.
.Com, .Net and .Org are the three most common and recognised domain name extensions in the world, but proponents of the .Xxx extension lobbied heavily for its creation in the hope that it would force adult content into a controlled zone on the Web, and would help to protect children and others from accidental exposure to internet pornography. It faced heavy opposition, however, particularly from religious groups in the U.S. which argued that the creation of this domain extension is morally and spiritually wrong, and would eventually lead to increased pornography on the Web.
