Knight was dead right
published: Wednesday | April 5, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN REFERENCE to The Sunday Gleaner lead story 'Ready to serve, etc.' , I have a few comments to make regarding the new Prime Minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson Miller. She said she would be instructing Cabinet ministers to appoint the clergy on every board, and that the Government should involve the churches "in what we do."

I do not think the Church has any business in the affairs of the state, as I see the churches playing an active role in the criminal activity in Jamaica by having large funeral bashes for gang leaders when they are killed by either the police or their own gang members.

Jamaica does not need a Prime Minister who goes about praying at every event and street corner and quoting verses from the Bible at every opportunity. The Prime Minister cannot run a country with her eyes closed. Her actions only prove that K.D. Knight was not really off-base in his harsh criticisms of her. He was dead right.

I am, etc.,
