THE EDITOR, Sir:
I CHUCKLED while listening to a talk show recently, where one of the callers insisted that it didn't take any special prophetic abilities to predict Portia Simpson's ascension to the post of prime minister, and you did not even have to be a churchgoer to realise her popularity.
The recent fascination with 'prophetic utterances' should have everyone on their guard. Will this be the means used to make decisions for the good of the nation? Will those self-acclaimed 'prophets' be charting our future while they await a vision or a 'thus saith the Lord' to approve projects, borrow more money or sign trade agreements?
The Prime Minister would do well to remember that the plurality of denominations and diversity of religious beliefs in Jamaica will not only present a challenge in the selection of pastors to lead the charge, but can cause further divisions and factions within our fragile society, as the omission of certain faiths will surely breed resentment.
Just watch 'Religious Hard Talk'.
I am, etc.,
