Saving energy with solar water heaters
published: Thursday | April 6, 2006

UNDER JAMAICAN conditions of plentiful sunlight, solar water heaters can provide 100 per cent of a household's hot water, saving approximately one third on the light bill.

The $75,000 cost of an average 45-gallon solar water heater can be recouped within an estimated two to three years. This water heater is sufficient for a family of four.

The government removed GCT on the products last year.

How they work:

A solar water heater uses solar energy (sunlight) to heat water.

Jamaican water is hard and limescale build-ups mean the system will need to be flushed out every 18 months.

Solar water heaters have a lifespan of 15 years.
