The 'Order' of official titles
published: Thursday | April 6, 2006

MILLER

The correct title of the new Prime Minister is Honourable Portia Simpson Miller. She will be conferred with the Order of the Nation (ON) at a later date, when her title will then become: The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller.

Past and present Prime Ministers were first conferred with this honour in 2002.

As explained in the Directory of the Orders of the Jamaican Societies of Honour, the Order of the Nation is the second highest order of the Five Societies of Honour, with the highest being the Order of the National Hero.

The Order of the Nation was instituted in 1973 by regulations made under the National Honours and Awards Act.

According to the directory, the honour of the Order may be conferred posthumously.

The members of the Order, who are alive, are required to be invested by the Chancellor of the Order with the Insignia of the Order.

The regulations dictate that the members of the Order are entitled to wear the Insignia of the Order, as a decoration; they should be referred to as 'The Most Honourable'; and to use the post nominal letters, 'O.N'.

The spouse of a member of the Order is entitled to be styled, 'The Most Honourable'.

In Jamaica, a member of the Order is required to wear the Insignia of the Order after the Insignia of the Order of National Hero and in front of all other decorations.

A notification of the conferment of the Honour of the Order is published in the Jamaica Gazette.

An Instrument of Appointment under the Seal of the Order is issued by the Chancellor of the Order to each member.

The Chancellor is the Chief Justice of Jamaica.
