Hurry, hurry to the curry festival
published: Thursday | April 6, 2006

WESTMORELAND'S CURRY Festival, a major fund-raiser for the Manning's School Development Fund, is on again this year, its fifth anniversary.

The festival, a family event, is set for Sunday, April 30 at the school in Westmoreland, starting at 9:00 a.m. And this year it is expected to be bigger and better. "We have expanded the variety of curry dishes to include those of the Chinese and Indian community," said the organisers.

This segment is sponsored by NCB and the booths will be adorned with ornaments from India and China. The Chinese will showcase a wide variety of dishes including curried shrimp fried rice, curried pork, curried fish and beef. Indians will entertain with live roti making demonstration, Chicken Tikka Masala, Madrass Fish Curry, Mutton Vindaloo, Chana Masala, Aloo Bhindi, Sweet Indian curry and a variety of vegetarian dishes.

INTERNATIONAL FARE

The Nigerians will also be showing off their skills while experts attached to the organ-isers will be serving up some good old curry crab, lobster, goat and chicken.

Jamaica's fine food is the product of a series of diverse cultural influences which highlights the colonial experiences of the Caribbean region the organisers noted.

It spans the gamut of culinary infusions, notably from the Amerindians, West Africans, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, English, Lebanese, East Indians and Chinese. This unique blend is underscored by the distinct flavour of spices with curry being one of the most outstanding.

Entertainment will feature Red Rat and the new all female band 'The kittens', Shane O, the new teenage sensation; and Chris Martin and Noddy Virtue of Digicel's Rising Star Competition; Boon Blast local artiest and Chrissy D will also perform.
