A FLORIDA-BASED law firm is soliciting clients to file a class action lawsuit against the operators of the cruise ship that caught fire en route to Montego Bay last month.
The firm - Lawyers and Settlements - has issued an invitation, through its website, to passengers who were on the Star Princess cruise ship to submit their claim for a possible class action suit.
One man died of a heart attack, and several other passengers were injured when the fire engulfed three floors of the Star Princess as it travelled into Jamaican waters on March 23.
The ship was en route to Montego Bay from Grand Cayman when a fire reportedly broke out in the passenger accommodations and later spread to adjacent cabins.
INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION
The incident has attracted international attention, with former chairman of the United States National Transportation Safety Board, Jim Hall, calling for a criminal investigation into the incident.
But the local agent for the cruise line has stoutly defended the crew's performance during the emergency.
It is not yet known whether any of the passengers has taken up the offer to file a lawsuit against the cruise ship operator.
The Star Princess was carrying 1,123 crew members and 2,690 passengers when the fire occurred.
The Star Princess is a Princess Cruises vessel owned by the Carnival Corp.
