CARICOM HEADS of Government will convene a special meeting
very soon to tackle certain critical issues relating to ICC Cricket World Cup
2007.
This decision was taken at Friday's meeting of the CARICOM Sub-committee on Cricket in St. George's, Grenada, where ICC CWC 2007 managing director and CEO Chris Dehring provided an update on preparations for next year's event, which will be held in the Caribbean.
Sub-committee members and Dehring both acknowledged that matters, such as Sunset Legislation and Venue Development, are
priorities which require urgent attention. The special meeting - to be held on a date and at a location yet to be determined - will focus on these areas and ways of fast-tracking them.
OPTIMISTIC
"The sub-committee welcomed Mr. Dehring's presentation and feels optimistic about the progress being made by CWC 2007 Inc., in Jamaica and the local organising committees (LOCs) in host venues," reported sub-committee member and sports policy adviser to the Grenada Government, Barry Collymore.
"The region still faces a number of challenges as we all count down to hosting this prestigious tournament, but the CARICOM sub-committee is confident that it can work with CWC to resolve these challenges effectively."
In his presentation, Dehring briefed sub-committee members on key issues, including accommodations, venue development and ticketing and submitted a 15-page status report, combining inputs from all ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. departments, including com-
mercial, event management and security.
The CARICOM Sub-committee on Cricket is chaired by Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. the Hon. Keith Mitchell. Also present at the meeting were the Hon. John Maginley, Minister of Health, Sports and Youth Affairs in Antigua; the Hon. Anthony Wood, Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports in Barbados; the Hon. Delano Franklyn, Minister of State in Jamaica; the Hon. Roger Boynes, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs in Trinidad and Tobago; Mr. Daniel Montrope, cabinet policy analyst, Office of the Prime Minister in Saint Lucia; Mr. Kenneth Gordon, chairman of ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. and president of the West Indies Cricket Board; Mr. Roger Brathwaite, CEO of the West Indies Cricket Board; Mr. Clarvis Joseph, Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda LOC and Dr. Edward Green, assistant secretary-general of CARICOM and ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. board member.
