May Pen 'Madness'

Revellers get on bad at Supreme Ventures Jamaica Carnival May Pen Blow-Out Fete, held at Jamalco Sports Complex, Clarendon, May Pen, on Saturday. - WINSTON SILL/FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER

OSCAR B'S ASSERTION that they saved the best for last held some merit, as what transpired at the Supreme Ventures 'May Day Red Alert', at the Jamalco Sports Club, May Pen, Clarendon, last Saturday proved that May Pen revellers were adequately blessed with energy.

A more appropriate title for the show would have been 'May Pen Madness' as the night was filled with crazy vibes and unconventional happenings: People stood in the pouring rain for over 10 minutes to gyrate, jump, wave and sing with Oscar B, Jomo and the Dragonnaires; some female patrons lay on the ground during Christopher Martin's performance, and there was a sudden rush on the bar when the liquor was sold for $100 within a 15-minute time frame.

However, the real star of the night was a female resident of May Pen who had the patrons staring in awe as she demonstrated some exceptional dance moves. This 'female edition of Bogle', as Oscar B branded her, did a version of 'Dutty Wine' with more energy and was more along the line of gyrating her waistline and rotating her head simultaneously in a rhythmic manner.

DANCE DEMONSTRATIONS

She was also asked to demonstrate some other dance moves which she readily agreed to do as the patrons roared in approval. In the end, she was awarded tickets to Chukka Cove, Digicel credit and a gift bag from Supreme Ventures.

With that bit of entertainment out of the way, it was back to dancing. Females swung their waistlines and the men did a fine job of keeping up.

Whenever Jomo or Oscar B quizzed the patrons about their energy level screaming out: "Unuh tiad now?" over the microphone, they were always met with shouts of NO!!! from the extremely vibrant and alert crowd.

Songs like Alison Hind's Roll it Gal, Swing the Engine, Te Le Le and Get the Cat, caught the crowd on 'fire' and when the Dragonaires began singing The People Want Water it came at an appropriate time as the heavens opened and showers of blessing poured upon the venue.

After being onstage performing for over an hour, Jomo, Oscar B and the Dragonaires left the stage and made way for the Hi Tension sound system whose selectors played a very entertaining set.

Christopher Martin, Noddy Virtue and Admiral Bailey also added to the success of the event as they each performed energetic sets. Christopher was obviously the crowd's favourite though as there was nonstop screaming from the ladies throughout his entire performance.

The vibes were great and the people quite energetic and 'May Day Red Alert' could possibly be the best staging of the Jamaica Carnival parish events, when compared to Portland, St. Thomas and Junction's version of the same over the past four weeks.
